MTN Group has confirmed a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to personal data of some customers in select markets. The company emphasized that its core infrastructure—including its network, billing systems, and mobile financial services—remains secure and fully operational.
Unauthorized Access Detected in Isolated Systems
According to MTN’s official statement, an unidentified third party gained access to data linked to certain system components. However, there is no current evidence that any customer accounts or mobile wallets were directly compromised as a result of the breach.
The scale of the affected customer base has not yet been disclosed. MTN noted that it is actively investigating the incident and is taking steps to contain the impact.
Security Response and Law Enforcement Involvement
In response to the breach, MTN immediately activated its internal cybersecurity protocols and notified law enforcement agencies in South Africa, including the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Hawks.
The telecom giant has also informed regulatory bodies in the affected countries. Coordination with authorities and investigators remains ongoing.
“We also informed the relevant country authorities and will continue to update them on an ongoing basis while working closely with them and law enforcement agencies in supporting their investigations,” the company said in its public announcement.
MTN stated it is in the process of notifying impacted customers, in line with local regulatory and legal requirements. Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
