Elon Musk, the tech billionaire and head of X (formerly Twitter), reported a significant cyberattack targeting the platform. The attack, which caused widespread service disruptions, allegedly originated from IP addresses in the Ukraine area.
Musk’s statement, made during a conversation with Larry Kudlow on Fox News, confirmed the severity of the incident:
“We’re not sure exactly what happened, but there was a massive cyber attack to bring down the X system with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area.”
The attack resulted in thousands of users experiencing service outages. The disruptions peaked early Monday morning and continued intermittently throughout the day, impacting both the X app and website.
Downdetector.com, a website that tracks outages, registered over 40,000 users reporting access problems. The most severe disruptions were concentrated along the US coasts, with a prolonged outage lasting at least an hour beginning at noon. Downdetector.com noted that 56% of reported issues were related to the X app, while 33% affected the website.
Musk had earlier alluded to the attack on X, stating: “There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing.”
He also responded to a post suggesting a connection between the attack and previous incidents targeting Doge and Tesla.
The scale of the attack suggests the involvement of a sophisticated, well-resourced entity, potentially a large group or even a nation-state. The investigation is ongoing, and the full extent of the damage and the perpetrators’ motives remain unclear.
