Frontier Communications Cyberattack Disrupts IT Systems

    Frontier Communications, a prominent American telecom provider known for its high-speed internet services, recently experienced a cyberattack.


    To contain the breach, certain systems were temporarily shut down to prevent the attackers from further infiltrating the network. Unfortunately, this also caused disruptions to the company’s operations.

    Personally Identifiable Information Compromised in Frontier Communications Cyberattack

    During the incident, the cybercriminals managed to gain access to certain personally identifiable information (PII). However, Frontier Communications has not disclosed whether this data belonged to its customers, employees, or both.

    The company is currently working on resolving the situation and strengthening its security measures to prevent future attacks.

    “On April 14, 2024, Frontier Communications Parent, Inc. [..] detected that a third party had gained unauthorized access to portions of its information technology environment,”

    “Based on the Company’s investigation, it has determined that the third party was likely a cybercrime group, which gained access to, among other information, personally identifiable information.”

    The company said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

    According to an internal memo, the following applications and platforms experienced a network outage on Tuesday morning at around 7:30 AM ET:

    • Virtual Front Office (VFO) Local (LSR/ISP) Module
    • Customer Wholesale Portal (CWP)
    • Wholesale Billing Online tools (CTS, CABS Portal, COBRA)
    • Wholesale Operations Website (https://wholesale.frontier.com)
    • E-Bonded Applications – EDI, UOM, TML
    • Virtual Front Office (VFO) Trouble Administration (TA) Module
    • Virtual Front Office (VFO) Access (ASR) Module

    Following the network outage, Frontier’s wholesale sites, as well as various applications and platforms, experienced temporary disruptions. However, despite the company’s reassurances, there have been reports from customers indicating prolonged Internet outages.

    Additionally, customers have encountered difficulties reaching support, as phone numbers have been playing prerecorded messages instead of connecting them with a live operator.

    “The Company continues to investigate the incident, has engaged cybersecurity experts, and has notified law enforcement authorities,”

    “The Company does not believe the incident is reasonably likely to materially impact the Company’s financial condition or results of operations.”
