Via Credit Union Data Breach Impacts Thousands: Indiana Credit Unions Face Cybersecurity Challenges
Two Indiana credit unions recently reported significant data breaches, potentially exposing members’ personal information. The incidents highlight the ongoing cybersecurity challenges faced by financial institutions.
Via Credit Union Breach Details
Via Credit Union, a $577 million institution in Marion, Indiana, reported a January data breach affecting 60,853 individuals. Their data breach notification letter stated:
“We reviewed the contents of files acquired by the unauthorized third party to determine if they contained any personal information. Beginning on January 24, 2025, we determined the identified files contained personal information that included your name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, Visa credit card number, and a form of financial account number.”
The breach occurred between January 18th and 20th, 2025. Via Credit Union launched an internal investigation, contacted law enforcement, and hired a forensic security firm.
Interra Credit Union Breach
The $1.8 billion Interra Credit Union in Goshen, Indiana, reported a separate data breach on January 23rd, affecting 1,847 individuals. This breach stemmed from an employee’s compromised email account, accessed between October 2nd and 9th, 2024.
Interra’s notification letter didn’t specify all compromised data types, only mentioning members’ names. They also launched an internal investigation and engaged a forensic security firm. Interra serves more than 90,000 members.
Credit Monitoring and Response
Both credit unions stated they have no reason to believe member information was misused fraudulently. They offered affected members one year of complimentary credit monitoring services. Both credit unions filed their data breach notifications with the Maine Attorney General’s office.
