MTN Ghana data breach affects thousands of customers
MTN Group has confirmed that a recent security breach may have exposed the personal data of approximately 5,700 customers of MTN Ghana. The company disclosed the incident on April 28, stating that it had launched a full-scale forensic investigation with the support of leading cybersecurity experts.
The breach prompted Ghana’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) to open a formal investigation into the unauthorized access of personal information belonging to affected subscribers.
MTN responds with direct outreach and security measures
In a statement, MTN Group said:
“MTN assures its customers that the privacy of information is our top priority, and we remain committed to safeguarding the integrity of our systems and the trust placed in us by our customers and other stakeholders. We will continue to contain and manage this matter carefully.”
MTN Ghana has committed to contacting all affected individuals directly. The company has also said it is dedicating the necessary resources to resolve the matter as quickly and securely as possible.
Customer guidance on preventing further fraud
MTN is advising customers to remain alert and follow basic cybersecurity practices to mitigate any potential misuse of their information. The company has provided a set of precautions for all users:
- Place a fraud alert on your credit report with major credit bureaus.
- Keep MTN, MoMo, and banking apps and devices updated.
- Use strong, unique passwords and change them regularly.
- Be cautious of unsolicited messages and avoid clicking suspicious links.
- Never share passwords, PINs, or OTPs through phone calls, texts, or emails.
