Cybercriminals threaten to leak KADOKAWA’s sensitive data if ransom is not paid

The BlackSuit ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on Japanese media giant KADOKAWA corporation last month. KADOKAWA is a major publishing and entertainment company in Japan that owns many prominent gaming studios and video platforms.

On June 8th, KADOKAWA reported service outages affecting most of its websites and subsidiaries due to a ransomware attack. This included the popular video sharing site Niconico, which was taken offline. The company said the cyber incident impacted systems hosted on their main data center that were encrypted by the attackers.

Nearly three weeks after the attack, many of KADOKAWA’s operations remain disrupted. The conglomerate provided an update stating accounting functions and distribution processes are still being restored and are expected to return to normal in early July.
