On April 2nd, 2025, a significant outage impacted ChatGPT, leaving millions of users worldwide unable to access the popular AI chatbot.
The issue manifested as a “Something went wrong while generating the response. If this issue persists please contact us through our help center at help.openai.com” error message.
This widespread disruption affected users across various regions, including the U.S., Europe, India, Japan, Australia, and other parts of the globe.
While the service initially responded to the first message in a conversation, subsequent attempts to interact with the AI failed. Even refreshing the page did not resolve the problem.
DownDetector reported the outage began within 30 minutes of initial reports. OpenAI acknowledged the issue in an update to its support documentation, stating:
“We have identified that users are experiencing elevated errors for the impacted services. We are working on implementing a mitigation.”
Update: The company confirmed the resolution of the issues. OpenAI’s status page (https://status.openai.com) notes that mitigation fixes had already been applied, and service was restored.
