Rainbow District School Board Suffers Major Cyber Attack: Data Breach Impacts Staff and Students
A cyber attack on the Rainbow District School Board has resulted in a significant data breach. Sensitive personal information belonging to staff and students has been stolen. The incident occurred on February 7th. This led to a system shutdown and a subsequent investigation followed.
The school board revealed that current and former employees are affected. This includes those employed between January 2010 and February 2025. Compromised data includes bank account numbers. Social insurance numbers were also stolen. Employee benefits and addresses were also accessed.
The board is offering a two-year free credit monitoring service. This is through TransUnion®. This will help monitor for identity theft. Student information was also compromised. This includes personal health data and social insurance numbers.
The cybercrime has been reported. Reports were filed with the Greater Sudbury Police Service and the OPP. The investigation is ongoing and the Rainbow District School Board encourages everyone to visit rainbowschools.ca.
